News Story
The name Fire Police disappeared in Auckland tonight following a function to mark the transition to Operational Support. Members of the Unit each received a certificate which effectively discharged them from their oath as constables and welcomed them into the newly named entity, Operational Support. A member of the board of the New Zealand Fire Service Commission, Vicki Caisley, was on hand to witness the transition. She thanked members for their volunteering and support as Fire Police and wished them well in their newly-named organisation. Chief Fire Officer Glenn Teal said the Unit was going out on a high - two recent events, the aftermath of the Christchurch earthquake and the Rugby World Cup, were examples of a job taken on by members with exemplary results. The words Fire Police will no longer be seen or heard in Auckland with changes to uniform, signage on vehicles, radio call signs, the website and stationery...all updated to Operational Support. Members now have new ranks and they received new insignia at tonight's function. Visitors to the website will notice not only a change in name and URL but additions and improvements to the content, and of course we have added a new milestone: the transformation to Operational Support.
