"Cones for Africa" creating temporary lanes at the Ranui crash

Members mounted a traffic management operation in Ranui this morning to assist morning commuters. Rather than road closures at the scene of a single vehicle accident on Swanson Road, Fire Police created temporary lanes near Airdrie Road so that traffic could continue to flow without disturbing the scene and endangering police who were investigating the crash. A station wagon, earlier sought by police, clipped a traffic island and, out of control, crossed the road, mounted the footpath and crashed into a tree, uprooting it. Firefighters freed the occupants, some badly injured. Two Fire Police vehicles attended: they were both stripped of every cone they carried, enabling the temporary traffic management to be put in place.
