The Brewery, Plane and Head-On Crash
11 June 2017
The plane had a full tank of fuel...firefighters spread foam as a precaution
One of our members, Mary Harding, assists with the clean-up at Chapel Road

Three calls today reflected the variety of calls our members respond to. First off, late morning, it was to flooding caused by a water main leak near Dominion Breweries, Papatoetoe, where personnel assisted with traffic management around the torrents (of water!). Early afternoon our response was to South Auckland where a light plane crashed on Runciman Road. The pilot of the custom-built plane, realising there were engine problems, tried an emergency landing... but it appeared the aircraft's wheels failed to clear a fence, flipped on impact and crashed coming to rest on the road. The pilot walked from the wreckage. Later in the afternoon we were paged to a motor accident at Flat Bush where several people were seriously injured. It was a two-vehicle, head-on crash, at the intersection of Chapel Road and Accent Drive. Members assisted police to close the intersection with only left-hand turns allowed... and a further diversion at Baverstock Road. This turned out to be a long duration task with additional members called on who were on their way home from the light plane crash.
