The weekend's calls included two 3rd alarm fires, one in West Auckland at Oratia, the other in Otahuhu, South Auckland - almost simultaneously. The first was at 9.30 on Saturday night, a large house at the end of a long driveway on West Coast Road. The third alarm transmitted reflected the resources required to contain and extinguish the blaze which destroyed the house and an attached shed. 14 members responded, two in the mobile canteen, Duties included assisting with traffic and scene management as well as breathing apparatus recommissioning. It was a long-duration event, interrupted just on midnight by advice of a second 3rd alarm response to a fire in a scrap metal recovery plant in Otahuhu. The outbreak was in a three-storey part of the complex where scrap metal is shredded and crushed, part of the recycling process. The mobile canteen curtailed service at Oratia and went to Otahuhu where 9 members were already carrying out traffic management, scene control and lighting.
Other calls at the weekend included a hazardous substance alert in Ellerslie, two fires in Ponsonby and a motor vehicle accident near Kaukapakapa.
