Members responded to the weekend's series of suspicious fires at Piha on Auckland's west coast. First alert was around 2am yesterday to a structure fire which turned out to be a fish-and-chip shop at Piha South, adjacent to the Surf Lifesaving Club. As firefighters tackled this fire our members were alerted to another fire in scrub. This turned into a long-duration event, 90 firefighters assisted by two helicopters prevented the blaze spreading to nearby houses and then, by late morning, getting it under control. A third fire in bush was quickly dealt with. Police are investigating these fires and other suspicious outbreaks last week. Our Members assisted with helicopter operations, pumping from portable pumps, traffic management and, from the mobile canteen, serving meals. All in all, 19 members attended with operations lasting 15 hours.
