This morning's downpour in some Western suburbs resulted in firefighters receiving many calls for help with flooded houses, shops and garages. But the longest lasting effect was a torrent crossing Great North Road where the road dips between New Lynn shopping centre and Titirangi Road. The culvert under the main road could not handle the volume of the torrent: it spilled over the road and filled the area making it impassable for all vehicles. The water banked up creating a lake until the pressure carved out a section of the footpath. Several parked cars were caught in the flood, six shops suffered flooding, and with Great North Road closed, traffic congestion resulted all around New Lynn. Members at one stage had traffic control at 7 different places, trying to divert vehicles from the flood and at the same time keep motorists on the move.
