While Auckland's inner city suburbs experienced only light rain overnight, it was entirely different in South-Eastern districts where, hour-after-hour, driving rain resulted in rescues, evacuations, flooding, slips, road closures and road accidents. Members responded in the mobile canteen just after six o' clock today to provide refreshments and meals for about 120 school children, evacuated to safety in the darkness from Camp Adair at Hunua. At the same time other members were paged to a motor accident at Kingseat where a bus and a car collided, blocking the Papakura-Kingseat highway. Members maintained road closures throughout the morning commute- and at one stage the communities of Waiau Pa and Clarkes Beach were cut off by the road blocks. Emergency services were also busy in Hauraki and Coromandel districts during the storm which a Civil Defence spokesman describes as "a one in 100 years event".
