Scrubbie at St Johns
31 January 2017

Fire spread through bush and scrub alongside the Eastern railway line near the St John tunnel this morning. Firefighters tackled blazes on both sides of the railway, necessitating the line to be closed and the overhead electric lines deadened. Fire crews made access through private properties in Gowing Drive and John Rymer Place, hauling long hose-lines down into the gully. Our Members closed surrounding roads and provided refreshments to the crews working in the scrub and on the railway line. No houses were threatened by the fires: main firefighting operations wound up in time for the railway to be reopened for morning commuters.
