Bush Fire at Cornwallis
26 December 2014
Smoke from the fire could be seen from one of the road blocks.

The brigade's been at a major alert in West Auckland's Waitakere Ranges where a bush fire, reported mid-afternoon, threatened to destroy houses. About 70 fire fighters, which amounted to the equivalent of a 5th Alarm, were deployed to prevent the blaze reaching houses near Cornwallis Road and to damp it down. Two helicopters using monsoon buckets assisted. Fire appliances made many round trips until sundown, ferrying water to the fire from a supply near Huia. Members helped with road closures and traffic management, meals, and closed a reserve near Cornwallis Beach while the choppers refuelled. Firefighters will keep watch overnight in case of any flare-ups and work to extinguish the fire in the morning. The call was something of a milestone - Operational Support members from 3 brigades... Auckland, Titirangi and Laingholm worked together for various deployments.
