Operational Support vehicles deployed by fire brigades came into discussions at the UFBA Conference held this weekend in Tauranga. A workshop was held to hear Brigades' views views on vans and utility vehicles which for many include vans and station wagons used for Operational Support duties, for medical responses or as troop carriers and running general station errands. The workshop was led by NZFS Fleet Manager, Mike Moran, who explained he is preparing a proposed policy document and is looking at such things as minimum safety standards, ownership, livery and uses to which vehicles are put. Other themes emerging from Conference included the increasing urgency to reform fire services' legislation, the need to change the way fire services are funded and a push to preserve fire brigade heritage. The spotlight also fell on Rural Fire... with an extended mission and a challenge to make UFBA more relevant to volunteer members of rural fire forces.
