26 October 2014
Fire destroyed a cafe under construction in Cornwall Park

Two fires in different Auckland suburbs at the same time are being investigated as suspected arson. The first blaze was in Cornwall Park, Greenlane and destroyed a building under construction. It was to be the park's new cafe and required only finishing touches before being opened in 2 weeks, anticipating summer visitors. Damage has been put at around a million dollars. At exactly the same time West Auckland firefighters were engaged in second alarm operations in Blockhouse Bay Road. Fire investigators and detectives are also probing this outbreak which damaged the Islamic Centre in Blockhouse Bay Road, Avondale, a mosque at the centre of recent controversy between Auckland's Muslim factions. Fire was confined to a small area within the rambling complex. Members contributed to traffic management and security at both incidents.
