Appliances taking part in Helensville's Centenary Parade
Helensville Volunteer Fire Brigade celebrates its centenary this weekend with activities to mark the milestone. This morning there was a parade of fire appliances, big and small, through the town. Our members took the mobile Canteen, and, of course, the Wendy House - smoking as usual - made its appearance. Helensville's volunteer brigade began in 1915 under Captain A. G. Robinson but firemen had to wait until March 1917 for their first serious blaze, a fire in the upper structure and decking of the "Bellbird" tied up alongside the Railway Wharf. The brigade was credited with "a good save" by the Press at the time.
