First Call-out With New Radios
15 October 2014

The Brigade did not have to wait long to realise the benefit of its new radios. Within an hour of the switch-over to the new communications package, members were called to assist with traffic management at an oil spillage in Ellerslie. The incident occurred just before evening peak hour traffic and restricted lanes and roads quickly caused congestion. A bus travelling to the city had been leaking oil, leaving a trail for some 4 kilometres between Panmure and Harp of Erin. Tell-tale puddles of oil on the roadway at traffic lights and at bus stops indicated where the bus had stopped along the way. Members assisted with absorbent and traffic management as well as checking the bus route for any further spillage. The new radios played their part with crystal-clear messages exchanged between the 8 members who were part of this operation, as far apart as Drury and Massey.
