All operational members of the Fire Service are expected to maintain First Aid currency and Auckland Operational Support is no exception. Yesterday several members of our brigade attended a full day training, with more members scheduled for the same course this weekend coming. Subjects covered included CPR on infants, children and adults; The use of AED's (Automatic Electronic Defibrillators) ; Primary and Secondary Survey and mass-casualty triage using the START method. We also ran several scenarios with brigade members seconded into the role of 'patient', complete with simulated injuries (some impressive acting jobs ensued!). The training is provided by St John as a special course for the New Zealand Fire Service, and results in NZQA Unit Standards for all members who demonstrate competency.
