The Brigade's been supporting today's big exercise in Auckland where personnel from the local Urban Search and Rescue Team have been honing their skills. Their mission was to rescue persons trapped in a collapsed concrete building and a very realistic underground scenario was created at City Station, Pitt Street, with an ingenious conversion of the vehicle inspection pit in the old Brigade workshop. Working in two shifts, "rescuers" toiled in dark, dirty and dust-filled situations to cut and drill their way through thick concrete. Some panels were arranged to replicate tonnes of toppled or pan-caked debris... with trapped persons inside. Our members took the mobile canteen to the exercise and provided meals and refreshments for the team throughout the day.
