Members assisted at 2 motor vehicle accidents today: both were on Auckland's busiest roads. The first two-vehicle smash occurred this morning on the intersection of Blockhouse Bay Road and New North Road, almost outside the Avondale fire station. Five roads connect so traffic soon built up. Northbound flows on Blockhouse Bay Road had to be diverted for nearly an hour while the scene was restored to normal. Then, this afternoon's collision on Dominion Road caused this very busy road to be closed with detours put in place and sign-posted. Brigade members closed roads at 6 locations, including one of Auckland's busiest intersections, Mt Albert Road and Dominion Road, with extra point duty at May Road and Mt Albert Road because of altered flows around the area. Police investigated the scene as a serious crash incident: road closures remained in place for 3 and a half hours. This was one of the biggest urban traffic management tasks undertaken by members in recent years.
