Record Day for Brigade

Firefighters lower loose roofing to safety at Browns Bay
Today's wind gusts too much for the 102 year old Ferry Building

Today's pre-Easter storm with gale-force gusts and heavy rain provided the scenario for the Brigade's busiest day ever. Between 7.20 am and 7.20 pm we attended 16 calls which by far exceeds our previous busy day with 9 turn-outs on 26 July 2008. Most damage was caused by high winds - gusts of up to 110 kph were recorded in greater Auckland, wreaking havoc with trees, power lines, roofing, awnings, sheds and the odd trampoline. The calls our Brigade attended were all as a result of the weather: our duties on-site were all in the interests of public safety. This meant road closures, diversions, barriers and traffic management around windblown trees, fallen power poles and downed power lines. (The calls are listed in the item Storm Surge, below).
