Busy Start to Weekend
15 March 2014
Hobson Street blocked by appliances during the evening commute

The Brigade's weekend began with a flurry of calls overnight - and none connected with Cyclone Lusi and the anticipated workload it may generate as it passes across the region. Late yesterday afternoon a fire in a restaurant of a downtown high-rise apartment block escalated to a 3rd Alarm, necessitating Hobson Street to be closed during the evening traffic commute. Members assisted at surrounding intersections to help clear traffic: Hobson Street is one of the busiest stretches of urban road in New Zealand. Our brigade carried out a full range of duties during the long-duration job, including attendance of the canteen vehicle. At the same time other members attended an animal rescue in West Auckland and within hours Eastern members assisted at a classroom on fire at Pakuranga College. In the early hours we were turning out again: the canteen vehicle responded to a bush and scrub fire at Onewhero in South Auckland.
