School Fire, Richmond Rd
12 January 2014
Smoke billows from the classrooms' eaves and roof into the early morning sky

This morning's third alarm call, just before 6am, summoned reinforcements to Richmond Road Primary School in the inner suburb of Grey Lynn where a block of classrooms was on fire. Flames and smoke at one end of the building greeted fire-fighters who limited fire-spread within the building and stopped it reaching adjacent classrooms. Members closed Richmond Road, assisted at the Command and Breathing Apparatus units, provided refreshments from the mobile canteen and maintained security at what turned out to be suspicious fire. Fire investigation officers and detectives were on the scene from an early hour and have since confirmed in media statements that the fire was deliberately lit, along with an earlier blaze in a tree within the school grounds.
