Karekare Revisited
3 January 2014
Debris, stones as big as footballs, washed down the vertical cliff face
Members were back at Karekare today, asked to assist at the mop-up of yesterday's scrub fire. A helicopter was again used to dump water on pockets of fire located on steep slopes high above the road. Trouble was the run-off flushed down stones, plants and other debris which landed on the road making it dangerous for traffic or pedestrians. Members closed the road either side of the debris and also assisted with scene protection at the 'dipping point", where the helicopter's monsoon bucket was scooping fire-fighting supplies. Operations continued until late afternoon.
