Bush Fire Beaten Back
2 January 2014
Helicopter with monsoon bucket douses the Karekare scrubfire.
The fire that engaged fire-fighters for most of the afternoon at Karekare appears to have been extinguished before nightfall. The blaze swept up, and along, a cliff face opposite the waterfall at the popular west coast beach. Fire-fighters were withdrawn from the scene when 2 helicopters began to dump water on the fire causing rocks and debris to dislodge, falling on the road below. It will probably remain closed overnight. All fire-fighting was called off at nightfall - there will be inspections of the site in the morning. The Brigade sent the Canteen and two other vehicles to assist.
