The announcement of Nelson Mandela's demise signals the passing of a staunch advocate of volunteerism. Considered South Africa's most exceptional citizen who became world-renowned, Mandela recognised the value volunteers make to society, inspiring them to action and championing their efforts. Asked what birthday present he wanted when he turned 95 the anti-apartheid icon said he wanted to share his gift, suggesting that charitable causes would benefit if everyone volunteered for a charitable cause. And across South Africa his wish was carried out as hundreds of thousands of volunteers engaged in countless community projects. Many, which began that day at Mandela's behest, will continue for decades to come. The United Nations, years ago, recognised International Nelson Mandela Day and suggested that, globally, people contribute 67 minutes' volunteered service to society, one minute for each of Nelson Mandela's years of political service. Haere, Madiba, friend of volunteers. Haere, haere, haere.
