News Story
Stormy weather has resulted in an increase in operational tempo for New Zealand Fire Service resources across the region. In Mt Eden, Operational Support were called to ensure the safety of the public when a large tree, aided by strong wind gusts, split itself nearly down the middle. Neighbours reported a loud creaking noise that sounded like 'the next-door house losing its second story'! The tree was in the property of the St Barnabas Anglican Church on the corner of Mt Eden Rd and Bellevue Road, and power lines downed by the sizable piece of timber not only posed an immediate danger to passers-by, but caused live wires to land on several parked motor vehicles. One of these was substantially damaged by rigging pulled down from a nearby power pole, but fortunately the tree caused no other damage to people or property. Members of our brigade ensured the scene was safe until the arrival of Vector and their traffic management contractors.
