Taking Care of 17,000
3 November 2013

Members today assisted with traffic management at the Auckland Marathon in which 17,000 runners and walkers took part. Members managed numerous intersections along Quay Street and Tamaki Drive between the CBD and Okahu Bay ensuring participants had the right of way and were safe as they completed the course. Among the 17,000 were those who dressed up. Darth Vader made a terrestrial appearance, both an elephant and a rhino plodded along the route and then there were soldiers, being themselves, complete with heavy military back-packs. Our members attended to a few runners with cramp and exhaustion. Today's duties were a fundraiser for the Brigade. Later in the day there were two callouts at the same time... to a road accident with serious injury involving a bus and a car in New Lynn and a second alarm bush fire on the outskirts of Helensville.
