One in 14,000!
30 October 2013

There's always one! Members managed thousands of vehicles around road blocks they put in after the South-bound motorway On Ramp to SH 20 was closed yesterday following the capsize of a trailer containing 20 tonnes of rubbish. Over the 5 hours that members managed the cordons some 14,000 vehicles were diverted. Among them there was one, a beaten up station waggon, at the head of the queue and whose driver would not budge, further delaying the tailback along Neilsen Street. The driver was strongly advised to move on, and he did, proceeding straight through the cones into the no-go closed area. Quickly stopped, it was plain the driver was affected by alcohol. The vehicle had neither number plates nor warrant of fitness - no windscreen in fact - and had wheels that didn't match. Every panel was damaged. Police escorted the driver from the scene. The car had been taken from nearby Waikaraka Park, home of stock car racing. All 13,999 other vehicles, many of them trucks, safely negotiated the cordons.
