Gas Turns to Water in Avondale
11 October 2013
Escaping gas changed to a water hazard in Blockhouse Bay Road

Motorists have been aware of road works around Wolverton Street/Blockhouse Bay Road/Tiverton Road in Avondale for many months, but this afternoon there were other reasons for the road to be blocked, and later, down to one lane. Mid-afternoon a 32mm gas main ruptured in an excavation trench: risk of explosion or fire meant busy Blockhouse Bay Road had to be closed. Members assisted with road blocks until the gas pipe was repaired, but before the road could be fully opened a 150mm water pipe in the same trench was broken. So instead of clouds of gas, jets and torrents of water now caused a hazard. Members and police rearranged traffic management to reduce Blockhouse Bay to south-bound traffic only. Evening peak-hour traffic meant there was some congestion until the "gusher" was turned off and two-way traffic could be resumed.
And in a further development, members were responded back to the same intersection late tonight to assist with a motor vehicle accident.
