For the first time, 3 separate Region 1 Operational Support Units have combined at a single event. Auckland, Silverdale, and Whangarei-Kaipara are tonight at the scene of a major accident, on State Highway 1 north of Wellsford.

The three units have combined to provide scene safety, lighting, traffic management and meals. SH1 was closed late afternoon after a stock truck and a car collided on bends near Topuni.

The driver of the car was severely injured, and Police have put down some 30 head of cattle, trapped in the wreckage of the overturned truck. Operations to salvage the truck-trailer will continue into the night, and the road will remain closed for the duration.
