News Story
High winds and heavy winds were experienced in many parts of Auckland late this afternoon. Power wires came down, roofs dislodged, trees blown over and, in Newmarket, a giant sign was caught in a gust. Measuring some 10m by 5m the fabric sign, together with its wooden frame, was dislodged from scaffolding across the face of a building, crashing to the footpath and on to the roadway in Teed Street. Evening peak-hour traffic in Broadway was blocked by fire appliances in busy city-bound lanes and congestion quickly spread to neighbouring streets. Members managed to keep evening peak-hour traffic moving and closed off Teed Street until workmen removed debris and checked that the scaffolding had not been affected by the storm. Members responded at the same time to power lines down in Campbell Road, Greenlane, necessitating a road closure.
