Volunteering Week Begins

It is National Volunteering Week and the theme this year is He tangata, He tangata, He tangata! reflecting It is the people! It is the people! It is the people! - the life-force of volunteering. The New Zealand Fire Service, saluting its 8,500 volunteer personnel, is acknowledging their contribution saying quote We could not do it without you. Auckland Operational Support has 60 members and responds to more than 550 working calls each year, the biggest and busiest of the Fire Service's 384 volunteer brigades. National Volunteering Week,16 - 22 June highlights the place of all volunteers in New Zealand - a 2008 study showed they contributed more than 270 million unpaid hours of work valued at more than $3 billion. Their work also creates positive changes on many fronts, including emergency services and community.
