Two Calls At Once
25 January 2013
City Station's aerial went bush today to help fight the scrub fire in Hunua Gorge.
Members responded to 2 calls for assistance at the same time around 5.45 am today, both in South Auckland. The first was to a house fire in Pukekohe which left the premises badly damaged and fire investigators looking into the cause. The second call was to the Hunua Gorge where bush alongside the road was alight. The fire quickly spread up the steep bank. The road was closed because fire-fighting operations, including a portable dam, blocked the carriageway and then rocks, loosened by the fire, began to tumble on to the road. Members stopped all through-traffic until replaced by contractors. The canteen was on site until mid-afternoon, welcomed by firefighters working the steep slopes in the searing heat of the day.
