The run of turnouts began on Friday at 11pm with a Second Alarm shop fire in Symonds Street, Eden Terrace. Members had no sooner set up support services when there were two further calls, to a motor vehicle accident in Manurewa and another, simultaneously, at Glenbrook in South Auckland.
The string of incidents kept our people busy into the small hours including an alert at Auckland International Airport and then later in the morning, a fire in a railway wagon in Penrose followed by a Second Alarm turnout to a house fire in Takapuna. Members closed surrounding streets while fire-fighting operations continued. The house was left badly damaged. Tonight's call was in Neilson Street, Onehunga, a 2 car motor accident. The cross-town route was busier than usual because of the international Rugby League match staged at nearby Mt Smart Stadium. Members assisted with traffic management.

FENZ Bill Passes 3rd Reading
"); document.write("
4 May 2017
"); document.write(""); document.write(""); document.write(""); document.write("

"); document.write("The Bill reforming fire services in New Zealand has today completed its passage through all stages in Parliament and awaits the Royal Assent to become law. The Fire and Emergency New Zealand Bill was introduced by Minister Peter Dunne, and its third reading today ends a long saga of attempts to reform our fire services. Minister George Hawkins announced sweeping changes in March 2004. Over the 13 years there have been 2 formal reviews, several major consultations... and seven ministers. The Bill amalgamates urban and rural services, enables firefighters to legally undertake non-fire emergencies (and with indemnity), provides local advisory committees to influence and advise FENZ and improves support for volunteers, enabling them to communicate directly with FENZ. MPs who spoke in today's debate about the Bill all acknowledged the work of firefighters, especially volunteers. and most recognised that the reform was a significant measure updating matters that had been let slide over decades. MPs also congratulated Peter Dunne on successfully formulating the measures and then shepherding the legislation through all stages. Several MPs regretted that the word \"service\" has been dropped from the organisation's new name because, they said, it's apparent that service to the community is the foundation mission for all firefighters. Of interest to our members will be the new clause under \"additional functions\" that may be carried out by FENZ: \"providing assistance at transport accidents (for example, crash scene cordoning and traffic control)\". This measure is timely: Auckland Operational Support members already provide traffic management at 95 per cent of all incidents they attend so it's fitting this will be enabled in law. The Bill passed today, fittingly International Firefighters' Day, with all-Party support except New Zealand First who opposed it. The new entity, Fire and Emergency New Zealand, comes into being on July 1st.

It was the missing persons and instability of the land that triggered attendance of the Fire Service's Urban Search and Rescue team. Our members closed roads, maintained cordons and turned out the canteen to provide hot drinks for those evacuated and emergency workers. Other members attended 4 storm events at the same time - shops flooded in Glendowie, a road closure because of a fallen tree near Whitford, a partial road closure on Tamaki Drive at a slip and, on the same road, a motor accident. And Debbie's not done yet... we were paged to assist at flooding in Maraetai this morning, and further downpours are forecast for this afternoon.

Our brigade was represented at the ceremony by Chief Fire Officer, Glenn Teal, and Deputy, Ric Carlyon who, on behalf of the United Fire Brigades' Association, presented Rodney with his awards. Ric remarked that Rodney's Gold Star is unique, representing service in 3 different entities - Volunteer Fire Brigades, in a Volunteer Fire Police Unit, and in a Volunteer Rural Fire Force administered by a Local Authority. \"I don't believe any other Gold Star holder will be able to achieve this again... no one can belong to a Fire Police Unit anymore and after changes in July there won't be any Rural Fire Forces administered as they are today\", Ric said, \"thus Rodney is the last Gold Star holder to have served in all three arms of fire services in New Zealand as we have known them\". Waimakariri Mayor, the local MP and Canterbury Fire Service executives were among dignitaries attending. C.F.O. Glenn Teal observed that Rodney had been in Auckland Fire Police from the mid-1980s during a time of reform and when the Unit was very busy with numerous, and regular, Greater Alarms.
