News Story

A fire in a shed which spread to a house resulted in busy New North Road being blocked to traffic during the evening commute's peak hours. The buildings, near Western Springs Road intersection, were out of sight below street level. They were badly damaged in a smoky fire that could be seen from the motorway and other inner suburbs. At first it was thought occupants may have been trapped in the blaze, but all persons were eventually accounted for. Our brigade organised Stop-Go bus lane so passengers were not inconvenienced but all other traffic was diverted while New North Road was blocked by emergency vehicles and a hose-line across the road.Caught up in the diversion was a motorist who was confused about what he was being asked to do. He was referred to police at the scene who tested his breath and he was taken from the scene when it was found he greatly exceeded the legal limit.
