This afternoon's 3rd Alarm fire was centred in the old Ambassador cinema at Pt Chevalier, a theatre that saw "The End" title in 1986 and has since been used as coffee bar, art studio, night club and apartments. Today's blaze created thick black smoke which billowed from upstairs windows until firefighters got the better of it. Meanwhile, one of the busiest intersections in Auckland at Great North, Pt Chevalier and Carrington Roads was badly disrupted when our members closed Great North Road to facilitate firefighting operations. Among those caught in the build-up of traffic were double-decker buses which, unable to deviate from their route to take the detour, had to wait until the road could be opened for them
