Firefighters responded to a second alarm call-out when there was a blaze in the 32-storey building in downtown Albert Street. A series of suspicious fires on various levels in the same building yesterday resulted in investigations by fire and police personnel. Today’s outbreak, like those yesterday, was quickly doused by the building's sprinkler system. Workmen are putting finishing touches to the apartments, now delayed by the series of fires and those apartments with water damage. Fire investigators and detectives are making inquiries into the latest outbreak. Our members carried out a variety of duties on and around the fire-ground. "); document.write("

The 32-level complex in Albert Street is still under construction, though most apartments are almost finished, decorated and carpeted. Firefighters were called to a small fire this morning and considered it was \"accidental\". But they declared a third alarm when they returned to the premises this afternoon, confronted with a number of unexplained fires occurring about the same time on different floors. All blazes are now being probed by detectives and fire investigators. Each fire was extinguished by the building's sprinkler system: water damage will delay occupancy of the affected apartments. Our members closed adjacent streets, organised pedestrians around the building and provided refreshments and other support services. "); document.write("

At one stage flames could be seen from the roof of the 3-storey building, just off Broadway, prompting a 3rd Alarm turnout by firefighters. Some nearby apartments were also evacuated, adding to those crowds of people who had their shopping and dining interrupted by the blaze. Members carried out traffic control and pedestrian cordons in surrounding streets, oversaw security of properties evacuated and set up the mobile canteen. The first, on Saturday near Helensville, was a long duration job and members took both the mobile canteen and the ablutions trailer in support of firefighters. 11 members attended, assisted by Silverdale Operational Support personnel. Activities included providing hot meals and continued into the evening until 10pm. Further firefighting was required on Sunday and the canteen and members, joined this time by the Helensville Operational Support team, were on the ground from early morning until mid-afternoon. Around 11am there was another vegetation fire, this time at Waitakere and a further 6 members responded along with locals from Waitakere Operational Support. Some members attended 4 or 5 events in the course of the day, travelling from one call to another as events were paged. Most calls were \"effects of weather\" and MetService data shows highest gusts, mid-morning, reached 80 kph while there were 3 periods of heavy rain: in the very early hours, at 10am and again early evening. Auckland received more rain during the storm than in the months of November and December combined. This, together with king tides, caused coastal flooding and waterfront erosion. Last night's fatal crash which members attended on the Whitford Road was not the only one attended by emergency services - there were 5 crashes along the route within 48 hours, 3 of them in the gorge near the Mangemangeroa Stream bridge "); document.write("

There have been a total of 23 call outs over the two days, most directly attributed to \"effects of weather\" such as power wires or trees brought down. We have also been at 8 motor vehicle accidents, some of which may also have been caused by the wet and windy conditions. The worst of these was this evening's fatal crash at Shamrock Park, near the Howick end of the Whitford Road in the gorge. It was the second major accident we attended on this road within our busy 48 hours: yesterday a truck hit a power pole leaving live wires across the road. Members also attended 4 structure fires over the two days, including a small blaze in an equipment room at TVNZ's Headquarters in the city which delayed tonight's news programme going to air. Longest duration on site for our members was three and a half hours at Kelston carrying out scene protection until Vector could make fallen power lines safe. "); document.write("

Since Christmas Eve there've been 16 calls, including escalating, or major events. There were two 3rd Alarms at the same time on 28th December... bush fire in Papatoetoe concurrent with a fire in the upper floor of a high-rise hotel in downtown Auckland. Other calls were to flames sweeping through a pallet factory at Wiri, to a fire in an office block in Manukau City and to a garage well-alight in Papatoetoe. As well as the serious Papatoetoe vegetation fire there was a major blaze in grass and bush in Waikumete Cemetery (results of suspected arson) and serious fires in two Mangere reserves, the latter a long-duration job in Ambury Regional Park. Members have assisted at 3 motor vehicle accidents... one in the southern-most reaches of our operating area on the Tuakau/Port Waikato Road, and others in Epsom and Karaka. We also attended a chemical spillage in a Mt Wellington factory. The flurry of calls which ended 2017 concluded with a late-night K99 garage fire in Mangere on New Year's Eve, with members still in attendance into 2018. "); document.write("
