Post-Storm Post Script
6 January 2018

Members attended 17 calls yesterday, just one short of our record in a 24 hour period - 18 turn-outs on April 17th 2014. Some members attended 4 or 5 events in the course of the day, travelling from one call to another as events were paged. Most calls were "effects of weather" and MetService data shows highest gusts, mid-morning, reached 80 kph while there were 3 periods of heavy rain: in the very early hours, at 10am and again early evening. Auckland received more rain during the storm than in the months of November and December combined. This, together with king tides, caused coastal flooding and waterfront erosion. Last night's fatal crash which members attended on the Whitford Road was not the only one attended by emergency services - there were 5 crashes along the route within 48 hours, 3 of them in the gorge near the Mangemangeroa Stream bridge
