Fire in Newmarket Plaza
20 January 2018
Newmarket Plaza: fire caused limited damage on all 3 floors.

A shopping arcade and its car park in Newmarket were evacuated today, at the height of mid-afternoon shopping, when fire broke out in a kitchen in the building's ground floor food court. At one stage flames could be seen from the roof of the 3-storey building, just off Broadway, prompting a 3rd Alarm turnout by firefighters. Some nearby apartments were also evacuated, adding to those crowds of people who had their shopping and dining interrupted by the blaze. Members carried out traffic control and pedestrian cordons in surrounding streets, oversaw security of properties evacuated and set up the mobile canteen. Once the car park was reopened, members safely escorted vehicles, one by one, to the exit. They also assisted with lighting and followed up with salvage.
